FABULOUS JOHN TAYLOR CARVED SCOTTISH DISPLAY VANITY WITH CANDLE HOLDERS: Palatial giltwood framed mirror atop a marble-top, carved & gilt console bench made by John Taylor & Son, Edinburgh (1825-1945); regarded as the best cabinetmakers of Victorian Scotland. The mirror framed in exuberant gilt gesso & wood frame having a scrolling floral motif with beadwork. The framework includes a small pedestal at each side for a large candle. Resting on a marble-top bench having profusely gilt relief panels and trim in acanthus, urn, floral, and beadwork motifs. Label verso from John Taylor & Sons Furniture and Upholstery, Edinburgh. Overall measuring approx. 95'' h x 80'' w x 17'' d. CONDITION: Wear commensurate with age and use including small bits of cracked gesso & loss at the frame. |

LARGE ANTIQUE J. THOMAS AUTOMATA GRANDFATHER CLOCK: A remarkable automata longcase clock by J. Thomas of Penygroes, Wales. This is a rare form of automata in which the lion's eyes move back and forth with the swinging of the pendulum. The lion and its prey are depicted with wonderful polychromed images with four wild cats encircling the painted dial, which includes a subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture above the maker's signature, all set behind a glass door. The wood case features a broken pediment and spiraled columns flanking both the hood and trunk of the clock. Approx. 92.5'' h x 29'' w x 11'' d. CONDITION: Missing parts; not in working condition. Crazed dial. Small areas with loss of wood. |
